Harry Potterの単語から

河合塾『医学部の受験の単語』に収録されていて、日常的な単語なのですが、いわゆる「受験単語」とは言えないものでHarry Potter and the goblet of fireでつかわれている単語をピックアップしてみました。いくつ分かりますか？

epigenetics（発生遺伝学）

Natureの編集者の文は、比較的読みやすいので、そこで使われているここのような「ニュース」関連の記事で用語に慣れておくとよいと思います。文章自体は難解ではないので、なれさえすれば用語は特に日本語に置き換えなくても意味はわかるし、むしろ日本語に置き換えないほうが分かりやすい、といえると思います。

以下、例よってほんの部分です。

The sense of place in the immune system

This series of reviews examines the effect of differing tissue environments on the activity and functional capacity of cells in the immune system. From their origins as hematopoietic stem cells, throughout their development and as mature cells, cells of the immune system find themselves in distinct and highly specialized niches, and contact with antigen or inflammatory signals changes their phenotype, activity and trafficking. ちょっと脱線気味ですが、用語の確認を。

New studies indicate that damage to the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) accumulates with age, specifically in the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra implicated in Parkinson disease. These findings suggest that mtDNA damage is important in the decay of dopaminergic neurons in aging and in Parkinson disease, resulting in loss of mitochondrial function and, ultimately, neuronal death.

Medical Terminology

医学用語など科学用語の用語法（Terminology）は、語源に由来する「語幹」を並べたり、接頭辞や接尾辞をつけたりするものです。
たとえば「用語法」は、'terminology'と言いますが、
これは、
termino+logy=語幹(word root)「術語」＋接尾辞(suffix)「学問or論」。また
termino=termin(語幹)＋o(連結母語)=termの連結形(combining form)
つまり、この言葉は、
（語幹＋連結母語）[連結形]＋接尾辞という構成になっています。

では、Nature関連の専門分野別の発行雑誌にNeuropsychopharmacologyがあります。
これは、
Neuro/psycho/pharmaco/logy
神経の/精神の/薬の/学問
で、「神経精神（病）薬理学」ということになります
最初の3つはともに「語幹」で、それぞれ最後がoになっているので、「語幹」＋「連結母音」＝連結形になっています。

ところで、先日「危険な」（言われている）売薬『ガスター10』は、「腹部」「胃」を表す、gasterあるいはgastrからとった名前ではないか、と言ったことがあります。正確には、gastero-が「腹部」、gastro-が「胃」の意味を表す言葉（語幹）の連結形です。ですから、gastrologyというと「胃病学」となります。ところがちょっと面白いのが、
intragastric=「胃内の」です。分解すると、
intra/gastr/icになります。「接頭辞」＋「語幹」＋「接尾辞」の構成です。
これまでとちょっと異なるのは、gastr/icの部分です。gastroではなく、gastrで、o「連結母音」がありません。これは、以下の「接尾辞」icが母音で始まっているからです。子音が重なっては発音しにくいので「連結母音」が加えられるわけです。

では、問題を一つ。今年のセンター試験でimmunityが注なしで使われていました。これは「免疫」という意味ですね。では「免疫学」はどう綴ればよいでしょうか。ちなみに、2004年に北海道大学の入試（前年に奈良女子大で出題）で出ていたimmune systemは「免疫系；免疫システム」です。

受験では医学用語をそれほど覚えることは求められないかもしれませんが、入学後は覚える必要に迫られることになるでしょう。ただ、医学部にしろ、他の学部にしろ、「語源」を知っておくと役に立つと思います。しかし、だからと言って「単語集」だけで暗記しても、弊害がでるだけです。読んだ英文に出てきた場合に、文章と関連付けて覚えるようにしましょう。

S.Korea's Hwang faked nine of 11 stem-cell lines: university

これは新聞記事ですが、Natureでもこの問題は取り上げられています。他にもこのところ論文、研究成果についての疑惑（東大なども）が問題にさせてるようです。ここまで高度化してくると一つ一つを検証できないからです。科学の問題はそれでも検証が可能な場合がまだ多いです。しかし、英語学習についてはいろいろなことが勝手に言われ、その多くが何の検証もなく垂れ流し、無批判に学校の授業などに取り入れられている現状は英語学習者にとっては由々しき問題です。

In a May paper in the journal Science, Hwang claimed to have created 11 stem-cell lines matched to patients in an achievement that raised hopes of creating tailored therapies for hard-to-treat diseases. But one of his former collaborators last week said nine of the 11 stem-cell lines were faked, prompting reviews by the journal and an expert panel at Seoul National University, where Hwang works.

The panel said Friday it found that "the laboratory data for 11 stem cell lines  that were reported in the 2005 paper were all data made using two stem cell lines in total."

To create fake DNA results purporting to show a match, Hwang's team split cells from one patient into two test tubes for the analysis --- rather than actually match cloned cells to a patient's original cells, the university said.

"Based on these facts, the data in the 2005 Science paper cannot be some error from a simple mistake, but must be seen as a deliberate fabrication to make it look like 11 stem-cell lines using results from just two," the panel said.

The panel said DNA tests expected to be completed within a few days would confirm if the remaining two stem-cell lines it had found were actually successfully cloned from a patient.

    The city's sewers each day soaks up its citizens' routines, taking in a steady stream of products. Toothpaste and shampoo may be harmless enough, but the waste also collects a wide array of medicines people take. Most drugs are poorly absorbed and metabolized by the body, so it is not unusual that the majority of a drug would end up intact in the urine. Because all water goes through toilets at some point, these artificial compounds, some quite difficult to break down, can eventually find their way into the city's water supply---even bottled water.
