米国では、職業としての医師の満足度が下落傾向にあるということで、医者が子供に医学部への進学を強要することはなくなっている、というのです。その大きな理由として、「訴訟費用と医療過誤保険料の高騰」を上げています。以下、一部引用します。

Alvarez: That's encouraging as one professional trend. However, on the downside, there's a crisis arising in the medical profession. It's no longer true that parents who are doctors lean on their kids to go to medical school. Around 70 percent of them now tell their teenagers to choose some other profession.
Heinrichs: Public prestige for doctors has dipped a bit over the past 30 years, so other professions are now in the limelight. People shrug and say “so what?” What will they say, though, when the number of doctors has declined by an estimated 100,000 in hospitals and private practice? It's expected within the next 15 years.

Wu: Today it's not just a matter of job satisfaction and social standing. Some doctors admit that that’s not why they’re discouraging their offspring from medical careers. The deep-seated reason is the surging cost of lawsuits and  malpractice insurance fees.
Heinrichs: On the other hand, scientists who specialize in medical research and wonder drugs still stand tall at the peak of social prestige. Think of Dr.Salk and the polio vaccine. They may work in lonely labs or hard-driven pharmaceutical teams, but they share the satisfaction of doing something that can make a difference, whether it's a cancer cure or a solution to environmental pollution.
