Mark and Anna are in the final stages of job-hunting. They are discussing their future plans.
Mark: Hi, Anna. What a surprise to run into you here! How are you doing?
Anna: I've been running around attending job seminars until recently. ( 1 )
<就活をしている二人。以下、採用通知をもらっているようなので、(d) Have you found a job yet?>
Mark: I got an offer to work in the investment division of Simons Inc. They opened an office in Tokyo last year. I'd be working on a contract basis at the beginning but the salary is fantastic!
<採用は「契約社員」としてのようだが、給料がいい、という話。Annaは(A)で安定指向であることが分かる。から2は、(h) Sounds a bit risky to me.>
Anna: ( 2 ) The company may decide to pull out of the Japanese market and then you'd be out of a job! (A)In today's economy stability is much more important than money, I think.<給料よりも「安定」を優先するAnna>
Mark: ( 3 ) But at the same time I don't want (イ)to be stuck in some dead-end job doing the same thing year after year. The work at Simons will be challenging but the opportunities to travel and to get promoted quickly are much better. So, have you got anything lined up?
<Markは、平凡な安定よりもやりがいを求めている。Annaの考えにはついてけない。その点では、(e) I couldn't agree more.か(f) I strongly disagree.決め手は何?(イ)のdead-endは「袋小路」の意味。dead-end jobとは、給料のことか、仕事な中身のことかと考えると、以下のどちらを選ぶか? (c) to have no other professional options (d) to work in a low-paying position>
Anna: I'll be going back to my hometown to work in the planning department of the local city hall.
Mark: What kind of work will you be doing?
Anna: Mostly community development and helping foreign residents in the area.
Mark: That actually sounds pretty interesting. I didn't realize your town was so international.
Anna: ( 4. ) Almost thirty nationalities are represented.
Mark: ( 5 )
Anna: I can't complain. Nine-to-five schedule and little overtime.
I can't complain. Nine-to-five schedule and little overtime. >
Mark: Do you get both Saturday and Sunday off?
Anna: (ロ)That goes without saying, not to mention two weeks of vacation every year.
Mark: Well, it sounds like you found a perfect job. I really do hope we (ハ)keep in touch and you tell me more about your new life.
Anna: Sure, I think I still have your e-mail address. Listen, are you interested in getting something to eat around here?
Mark: I'd love to but... (ニ)can I take a rain check? I have to meet my cousin.
Anna: Oh sure, let's get together when you're less busy.
Mark: I'll call you then, take care.

Good Gene, Bad Gene: It Depends"というのがありました。
