Baby brain scans can predict who is likely to develop autism

A machine-learning algorithm has analysed brain scans of 6-month-old children and predicted with near-certainty whether they will show signs of autism when they reach the age of 2. The finding means we may soon be able to intervene before symptoms appear, although whether that would be desirable is a controversial issue.

Robot dog has an artificial woof that sounds like the real thing

ROBOTIC canine companions are getting an upgrade. Artificially generated barks that match a robot dog's physical characteristics can stop it falling into the uncanny valley.

Accelerating Antarctic crack will hasten calving of huge iceberg

An enormous chunk of the Larsen C ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula now looks doomed to calve into the Weddell Sea, possibly within weeks.
Its fate is being sealed by a sudden change of direction in a 200-kilometre ice crack. Until last week, it had been running parallel to the Weddell Sea, but it has now turned seaward, satellite images have revealed.
