TOKYO — Japan has raised its assessment of the accident at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to the worst rating on an international scale, putting the disaster on par with the 1986 Chernobyl explosion, in an acknowledgement that the human and environmental consequences of the nuclear crisis could be dire and long-lasting.

12 April 2011 Japan: Nuclear crisis raised to Chernobyl level
Japanese authorities have raised the severity rating of their nuclear crisis to the highest level, seven.
The decision reflects the total release of radiation at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant, which is ongoing, rather than a sudden deterioration.

JAPAN EARTHQUAKE AND NUCLEAR CRISIS
Japan is struggling with its worst-ever nuclear power disaster, following the magnitude-9 earthquake and massive tsunamis that struck the country on 11 March. Nature brings you regular updates on the crisis, as well as analysis of why this earthquake was so destructive, the Japanese government's struggle to respond to the nuclear disaster, and the effects on Japan's research community.

There is growing evidence that uranium and plutonium fuel at the Fukushima nuclear plant may have continued nuclear fission chain reactions long after the reactors were shut down almost three weeks ago.( 01 April 2011 )

They(government officals) initially suggested that the damage was limited and that emergency operations aimed at cooling the nuclear fuel at three striken reactors with seawater would continue.
[emergency operationsをaimed~seawaterまでが説明、would continueが述部。]
But industry executives said that in fact the situation had in fact spiralled out of control and that all plant workers needed to leave the plant to avoid excessive exposure to radioactive leaks.
If all workers do in fact leave the plant, the nuclear fuel in all three reactors is like(ly) to meltdown, which would lead to wholesale releases of radioactive material — by far the largest accident of its kind since the Chernobyl disaster 25 years ago.

Roadside Invader: Engineered Canola
By ANDREW POLLACK
Genetically engineered canola resistant to two common herbicides has been found growing widely along roadsides in North Dakota, one of the first instances of a biotech crop establishing itself in the wild.

GE(genetically engineered) crop
同義として
genetically altered crop
genetically modified plant
transgenic plant
など。
resistant to・・・
establish itself=establish(vi.)
